2020 Reprise: I Need a Little Christmas, Now!

For the first time ever, I have begun my Christmas decorating before rather than after Thanksgiving, the time when most folks in the United States think we should be decking the halls. (I do, however, have a cousin who bucks the trend, and she sets up her Christmas village well before Thanksgiving. Go, Cousin, go!)

Here are some of the many Santas that are decorating the bookcase in our living room  Most of the Santas are gifts, and how wonderful it is to see them again after nearly a year.

This picture features two gifts: The lovely panel is from my blogging friend Judy of New Hampshire Garden and Thread, and my mother gave me the Santa Clause.

Let’s face it—2020 has been one heck of year, and I suspect many of us need a little Christmas now. Here’s a rousing version of the song the title of this post borrows from, with Angela Lansbury belting it out as Auntie Mame. Wasn’t she cute as a button in her younger years?  Confession Time: I have never seen Auntie Mame as a play or a movie, and this just might be the year I rectify that mistake.

Haul out the holly, and slice up that fruitcake, now!

  1. Gosh, Laurie, in a way I envy you denizens of the northern hemisphere for Christmas decorations and traditional food seem to ‘right’ for your kind of weather. Our weather is very hot over the festive season – we tend to spend a lot of time in the swimming pool or seeking the shade! My granddaughters have shown me their lovely decorations in Norway too. While your early decorating is unusual for you, we too are having an unusual one: there will be three of us at home on the day and then we will celebrate Christmas all over again on the 27th when my Cape Town family arrive to visit for a few days. A double Christmas for us 🙂

  2. Since I have Thanksgiving decorations and Christmas decorations I have always decorated for Christmas after Thanksgiving. Nice Santa collection. I saw the movie years ago. Enjoy your Christmas decor.

  3. I noted yesterday there are Christmas lights up in my area, much earlier than usual. Yes, colorful lights and levity are a good thing about now. The cats are celebrating Catamus. 🙂

  4. Hi, Laurie – Your Christmas decorations (and music) are absolutely lovely. I have made it a rule never to decorate for Christmas before December. But I just may need to break this rule in 2020! 😀

  5. We don’t really celebrate Christmas, but rather we focus on Solstice and the fact that it signifies the move to longer days. Either way, it’s lovely to have a celebration in the dark days of winter and even more so after the past year, so enjoy your decorations and just ignore anyone who tells you to wait. We put our fairy lights up in May this year and they are now a permanent feature that we enjoy every single evening.

  6. Looking good! If you could see it here, you’d have a good laugh. Last week on a really warm day, I decided I needed some lights. So, off to the attic I went and got down some Christmas decorations including several small trees and set up my lights. No tree this year, but the place looks sparkly with the tiny white lights everywhere. It’s a nice mental boost, and since we can hardly remember what day it is who cares, right. 🙂

  7. The owner of the boat I’m working on now happened to come down on last Friday. When I got to the boat after lunch, he’d cranked up the Sirius Hallmark Christmas channel, and we listened to Christmas music while we worked. I think there are a lot of people who need a little Christmas just now!

  8. You have such a wonderful collection of Santas, I remember you have some cute tree decorations too. It is heartwarming to hear what joy they bring you.
I don’t really ‘do’ Christmas, but I do love to see fairy lights (even though seeing masses of them gives me concerns for the environment). I notice they are going up early in my neighbourhood too.

I met a woman from France last year who keeps her Christmas tree up all year round! She had it as her Facebook profile picture. Eeek!

    Meeeeeerrrrrry Christmas!!!!

  9. I have not put up decorations yet but am making some new ones to add a bit more oomph to the celebrations. I bought my daughter an artificial Christmas tree we very cheap in a sale a few weeks ago. It will stand outside next to her front door to welcome visitors. It is something I do every year too. A former colleague had a friend who liked Christmas so much that she and her family did Christmas in June as well! The whole thing – tree, decorations, roast turkey, cake, crackers. We all need things to look forward to at the moment so if Santas make you smile , well smile away!

    1. Lovely to be making new decorations! What a wonderful idea for your daughter to have a tree next to the front door to welcome visitors. And we sure do need things to look forward to.

      1. The ‘tree at the door’ began because there is no room in my house for a tree but It didn’t feel like Christmas without on so I put an artificial one I already had under the car port by the door and decided I liked it. When C said that she had seen artificial ones in a local store for £30 and thought of getting one but decided she wanted a real one in her sitting room I suggested she have 2! A real one inside and an artificial one outside. If it only lasts a year this cheap one will have been worth it.

  10. Love the Christmas spirit and wonderful Santas collection!!🙂 I’m usually already listening to Christmas music and thinking about the decorations, but have to admit I was struggling this year until I watched Dash & Lily – thank you!!🙂

  11. You have such a wonderful collection of Santas & other Christmas deco. We could all use some cheer ….
I am going to start baking Stollen (which is one of my favourite Christmas goodies) … why wait, right?

    1. Sigh, Hit “Post Comment” before my brain could stop me – I meant to comment on Angela Lansbury. My introduction to her was in her Mystery Series, “Murder, She Wrote” which I thoroughly enjoyed following as a teen.

When I heard her sing in Disney’s “Beauty & the Beast” is the first time I heard her sing. She is quite wonderful, as she is in this Christmas song.

  12. I’m glad you’re feeling festive. I found myself trying to read the titles on the spines in the second picture. The underwater welder was not what I expected to see! 🙂

  13. I had been thinking of getting out our tree decorations for the first time since 2016, when I was too depressed to decorate. But now…with three new cattens…I think not. It’s nice to see your beautiful decorations, though.
