The Wave of all Waves

Holy cats! Last night’s elections went beyond my wildest dreams. I expected Democrats to take the House—which indeed they did—but I wasn’t sure about the Senate. Well, Democrats took the Senate all right, winning in unlikely places such as  South Carolina, Texas, and Kansas. Kansas! The last time Kansas elected a Democratic Senator was in 1932.

Darline Graham, defeated. Ken Paxton, defeated. Roger Marshall, defeated. Astonishingly, in Maine, Susan Collins, defeated. And so many more.

I stayed up until 2 a.m., watching the election results on CNN. But somehow I don’t feel tired. Instead, I’m smiling. To borrow from President Obama…all fired up and ready to go.

Now, the hard work begins. So much in this country is out of whack—including but not limited to housing prices, college, the cost of health care. With Trump as president for two more years, there is a limit to what a Democratic House and Senate can do. But it’s a hopeful start to what has been a long, dark time for this country.

Supposedly, Winston Churchill observed, “Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted.”

Even if he never said this, it’s an acute observation. Twice, Trump was elected to run this country, and the second time has been a real doozy.

But finally, finally, last night, voters did the right thing.

  1. It ill behoves a Brit to comment on US politics (for heaven’s sake, we’ve enough problems of our own, enough reasons to look at ourselves in a mirror and be thoroughly ashamed of what we were and what we’ve become), but having said that, YIPPEE!!! The elections have had big coverage here, because although you guys are thousands of miles away, what you do matters to us. There’s a saying here which goes something like “when America sneezes, England catches a cold”, so when you prescribe yourselves a course of medicine we have good reason to celebrate!! Well done, you guys.

And thank you Laurie for illustrating your post with Hiroshige’s “The Wave” – it’s felt for a long time that we ordinary folk are like the passengers and crew of that little boat, so we will all be grateful for the calmer waters that will hopefully follow in the months ahead.

  2. I knew we’d hear from you today! Thought of you first thing when I read the headlines. And a pleasure they were to read. The old red haired dictator said to pretend he was on the ballot, and we did! The people have spoken, loud and clear, finally.

  3. Yes, here in Kansas, I am wearing blue!! This Kansas district was gerrymandered several years ago to water down the Democratic vote, specifically in my town. And not even that worked!!
    Happy dance!
Agenda: take away the power that ICE has been handed.

  4. We’re smiling and celebrating all the way with you Laurie, a happy dance from Scotland too! 🧡🎉 xxx
