Has Spring Sprung?

The front yard is dry enough for raking, and in my own slow, creaky-kneed way, I have almost finished with the front lawn clean-up. We had plenty of high wind this winter, which meant lots of sticks, acorns, and pine cones to pick up.

You might be wondering when this task had ever been accomplished by mid-March. The answer? Never.

Here is what mid-March—March 20—looked like last year. This might be stating the obvious, but there was no raking the front yard last year during mid-March. That task waited until mid-April.

Some readers might recall that we had a bad storm in December that knocked our power out for many days. Because it rained so much and the ground was super-saturated, a tree—roots and all—fell over.

Fortunately, it fell in the side woods away from our house, which means we don’t have to do anything about it. Nobody ever goes there, and it is barely on our property.

On a good note: The mud has dried up in record time. No more  footprints on the path in the backyard.

Will the weather gods play tricks on us and send snow our way? Possibly, but because all the winter snow has melted, whatever snow might come now will soon be gone.

This week promises to be busy one filled with good things. Clif and I will be celebrating our anniversary, I will be visiting a friend I haven’t seen since the pandemic, and with our books, we will be going to a spring craft fair on Saturday.

More about all this excitement next Monday.

Continental Breakfast: Courtney Barnett + Kurt Vile

This is one of the sweetest music videos I have ever seen, and watching the two musicians—Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile—interact with family and friends and each other never fails to make me smile.

Watchin’ the waves come in at nightFrom my back porch stoop, porch swing swingin’ on its ownSee it’s just an inhabitant of some holy ghost

  1. We had some flurries earlier today, but tomorrow is supposed to be 60 degrees. No wonder so many folks are sick, with this up and down, rain and shine, persistently windy weather! I’m still bummed Clif’s snow gauge had to be stored away so early.

  2. Good work, Laurie! It is so rewarding to be puttering outside in the yard once again, isn’t it? It is amazing to be doing it so early, before the equinox, wow!
Have a great week, happy anniversary and best of luck on Saturday!

  3. The yard is looking so well Laurie and happy happy anniversary to you and Clif! 🥂Here’s wishing you many more blessed years together ❤

  4. Happy anniversary Laurie and Clif, we celebrated ours in January, and as we get older these celebrations become all the more precious.
Paul said both of those songs come on in his playlist but he has not heard them together, so that was interesting.
    Have a lovely week…

    1. Thanks, and a belated happy anniversary to you. Yes, those celebrations become more precious as we get older. Courtney is from Australia, isn’t she? Paul has a cool Playlist. 😉

      1. Yes, Courtney is Australian. Paul likes a wide variety of music, and he said thank you for introducing him to some good music over time, for example, Olafur Arnalds who wrote the music for Broadchurch, amongst other great music.

  5. An anniversary and a book fair — and no more mud! It’s the little things in life that can be the best big things: here’s to many more years for you and Clif of good things, large and small — and maybe a lot of book sales!

      1. I was speaking to a man last night who claims not to have had a carb since October. He has had to buy new trousers and his last blood test showed he had dropped out of the diabetic range.
I admire his fortitude. And his memory. I am always forgetting that I am supposed to be dieting. 🙂

  6. Happy anniversary and good selling at the fair! We’re about a month ahead in Virginia. I had to start allergy meds in early February and the pollen count feels like late April, early May. I’ve been working in the garden, which is yielding all sorts of salad and cooking greens, as well as turnips and beets. And thanks for the Vile/Barnett cut. It’s lovely.

  7. I hope your spring weather continues, it was cold and snowy today and we have a chance for a snowstorm on Friday! Sounds like it’s going to be a wonderful week – Happy Anniversary and good luck at the book fair! Loved the video!!🙂

  8. A bit of freezing mix on the way for us down here on Saturday, but not anything big…
Geez….you beat me in the raking department! Every day I say, “I should go out and rake,” but then I think of things like the first day of the ice cream stand opening, and you know the rest of the story!
    Wishing you a happy week,
    Cheers,
    Julie

  9. What a difference a year can make! As you mentioned, the weather gods are keeping us on our toes. We keep saying that we need to get a start on our yard work but we are a little hesitant with more snow in the forecast.

Enjoy your anniversary and the craft fair. I hope you will sell many books.

  10. We thought we’d seen the last of winter, but we had a little snow yesterday. I’m sticking with the old saying about never casting a clout till May is out. Mother Nature likes to play tricks on us.

  11. What a difference between the two Marches, Laurie. Nice to get an early spring though and have the yard tidied up. Thanks for the music, and Happy Anniversary!
