A Mass Shooting in Maine

It finally happened in Maine in the small city of Lewiston, about 25 miles away from our home. A man with a gun killed people in a bowling alley and in a sports bar, so far 18 in all with 13 others injured.

A heartbreaking and sickening event. A woman I’ve known since she was a little girl narrowly escaped being killed.

The suspect is still at large, and much of southern and central Maine—where I live—is shut down.

I hope that this man is soon captured and put where he can’t hurt anyone else.

I’ll write more later, but I wanted to let everyone know that we are all right.

  1. We are following the story even as I write this…so sad! Glad your friend is safe. So sorry for the deaths and injuries and for the families!

  2. I’m glad you posted this, Laurie. I was thinking of sending you an email to make sure you were all right. This is simply beyond the pale. Thoughts and prayers do not cut it. Two weeks in a mental institution and ready access to his guns. 🤯😥

  3. I thought of you as well, with no thought it was so close to where you live. Damn. So sorry it happens anywhere, but sorry that this tragedy came your way.

  4. So glad to hear you are safe Laurie, I had just left a message on your earlier post. Love and prayers for everyone, it is so heartbreaking these things continue to happen and we hope the man will soon be caught. Sending hugs across the miles 💞💜💞 xxx

  5. Laurie, you sprang to my mind this morning when I heard the news, so I’m happy to hear you’re all safe. Thanks for letting us know! Unless we get a handle (and quickly) on the problems precipitating these shootings, I fear we’re doomed to have more of them. So much sadness in our broken world.

  6. Thanks for the update, Laurie. Many people will be thinking of you. This is so senseless. Sending hugs and inarticulate but sincere wishes from Felder and me.

  7. Thanks for the update, Laurie. Last night I thought “how close is that to…” and checked a map. I’m so sorry and hoping this guy will be captured soon. Sending virtual hugs.

      1. And once again, lawmakers at all levels will discuss this
ad nauseam and nothing will change as a result. A week from now it will fade from the news and the situation will be “same old same old”. Its absolutely pathetic, IMHO.

  8. This is so heartbreaking. But I guess it’s evidence that even in a place with few gun control laws…that letting everyone arm themselves…..doesn’t work either. It sounds as though this was definitely a mental health issue as well as a gun issue. There will be much discussion once this man is captured and the funerals are done.

    1. Yes, yes, and yes! No civilian should have a gun like that. If he had had a traditional rifle or pistol, someone would have been able to take him down. With the gun he had, there was no chance of this.

  9. Thanks for posting Laurie. I said to my husband last night ‘oh wonder if that is close to my blogging friend’ – 25 miles is not a lot. They seem to know who the shooter was too.

      1. It is hard to understand how guns, especially automatic ones, can still be so readily available after all the devastation they have caused.
        Stay safe. ❤

  10. This is heartbreaking and shouldn’t be happening again and agian. I’m watching the news right now and crying. I am so sorry your sense of safety has been damaged. Hugs and love and stay safe.

    1. So very heartbreaking! Because we are such a small state, nearly everyone in the area has some connection with those who were killed. Many, many thanks for your concern and kind words. They mean a lot to me.

  11. Like Tootlepedal, I thought of you when I read the news earlier this evening. I am so glad you and Clif are safe and I hope they catch this dangerous man before he causes any more misery. xoxo

  12. Thanks for letting us know that you and your family are safe! I immediately thought of you and checked to see how close you were. It’s heartbreaking and I’ll never understand how it keeps happening.

    1. Thanks so much! I appreciate it so much. Over and over and over it happens, in places big and small. Usually a white man with a gun and a grievance, real or imagined.

  13. Oh Laurie, I was thinking of you all day and hoping it wasn’t near you. Last news I saw said law enforcement had a house surrounded, and I do hope he is inside and is captured with no further loss of life.

  14. Thank you for the reassurance, Laurie. The first thing I did on watching our news was to find how far it was from you. Dead or alive may he be discovered soon.

  15. Glad to know you and family are safe. I’m watching the latests news on it this morning. Yesterday, I kept checking online every hour to see if they had found him. I imagine I’ll be doing that until they have him in custody.

  16. I certainly have a better sense of Maine’s geography and your location, now. I’ve been following events on WMTW, and praying that they find the man soon. His training and background may make him harder to track down, but it will happen.

    1. Thanks so much. As you can imagine, we are on pins and needles. Yesterday, I actually felt sick. Because our area is so small, there are personal connections. A Winthrop student and his father were among those killed at the bowling alley. Our town is heartbroken.

  17. I have family znd friends and school mates there. I was saddened by it.

Did I hear that he was found dead?

  18. I have been too busy to look at blogs for a few days and am so sorry to hear that this incident was close to your home. Delighted to know you are OK. I know from the news that the presumed shooter has been found dead so I guess you can relax a little now.
