A New Phone

Amid all the excitement in our household that now includes five adults, two dogs, and one cat, I can add a new cell phone to the mix. My old phone had been going for some time, but when I could no longer turn it on without plugging it into a charger, I knew the time had come to get another one.

More not-so-merry confusion as Clif and the nice young man at T-Mobile tried to get all our information migrated from our old phones to the new ones. (The package came with two new phones so Clif figured: What the heck. Why not get a new one, too?) I will spare readers a detailed list of the troubles we’ve had. Suffice it to say we are not quite there with email.

However, one huge improvement on the new phone is the camera, which, along with having a zoom lens, takes 50 megapixels pictures. Holy cats, that’s exciting to me. As soon as the camera was charged and ready, I took some pictures, and I was not disappointed by their clarity.

From yellow leaves in the garden

to Mr. Toad

to a close-up of my favorite mug,

I am utterly delighted with this astonishing camera in my cell phone.

My wee camera, with 20 megapixels, has served me well for many years, but I suspect I will not be using it much anymore.

Farewell, old friend.

  1. I recently had to do the same and found it all rather unsettling; everything was just a little different but the camera made it all worth it. What a cute cup!

  2. These days it seems the moment you buy a new phone its already outdated!! And the older I get, the longer it takes me to learn the new one. I hope you make friends with it quickly. You and Clif can support one another, right? Enjoy that phone camera, they really are splendid now. Love your pics! What kind of phone did y’all get?

  3. Modern phones are very smart. You will find no doubt that you can take slo-mo movies, macro shots and all sorts of things to waste your time. 🙂

  4. I have camera envy. My Canon is 24 megapixels, and my iphone 11 has only 12! Unfortunately, there’s no new camera or new phone in my future, so I’ll have to just chug along with what I have. Sigh. But enjoy yours, just as we’ll enjoy your photos and your pleasure in them!

      1. What a shock! We are all safe but as I write this at 12 am, the shooter still hasn’t been found. I will be writing a blog post about it tomorrow. The weirdest thing is that until I read your comment, I didn’t even know about it. As soon as I did, we turned on the news.

  5. Good luck. I still haven’t sorted all my stuff out with the phone. I probably never will. I would love to see a camera with an inbuilt camera. That would be useful. With arthritis I find I can’t grip a phone well enough for photography – it’s a good excuse and I’m sticking to it.

  6. Hi Laurie, so sorry to read about the shooting event in Lewiston, I hope the shooter is caught, and that people who are injured will recover. Best wishes to you and your family, such awful news.

  7. Changing any form of technology can be a real headache. The new camera will give such joy though.
Lots of love and take care in this crazy world.
Blogland remains a haven of positivity and support. Hurray to that. ❤

  8. We are due for new cell phones next month. It is a two-edged sword though, given how long it took us to get used to the ones we’ve been using for a while! I enjoy these photographs and am pleased to see your favourite mug 🙂

  9. Enjoy! But on a more serious matter, so pleased to know you’re safe from the madness unfolding in Lewiston. It was the top story on BBC Radio 4 news a few minutes ago, and as soon as I heard it I thought of you. Take care.

  10. I recently had to do another clear out of stuff and came across John’s camera. He was so proud of his ‘state of the art’ digital SLR. I was humming and haaing about what to do with it when my son pointed out that the camera in my phone was so much better than that one. He has a friend with an interest in old cameras and their history so took it to give to him which seemed better than taking it to the tip. How tech has moved on!

Like you I got a new phone a few months ago and had to learn how to find everything. Frustrating! I hope the last few issues get sorted soon,

    1. Glad you could find a home for the old camera. Yes, how technology has change. I am amazed and delighted that my cell phone camera takes such beautiful, crisp pictures. Getting the new phone sorted, but what a process!

  11. Just read the BBC news headlines this morning Laurie and glad you and your family are safe.
As for phones, mine has 50 MP too and I feel sorry for my rather good digital camera that never gets out of its case these days – I never could get my head round all those different lenses anyway,

    1. Thanks so very much! The killer is still at large, and we are all on edge. I am blown away by my new phone camera and the quality of the pictures it takes.

  12. Congratulations. I am impressed with what phone cameras can do, but I stubbornly stick to my camera which has no bells and whistles attached. Like you, I only change my phone when it dies

  13. Hi Laurie! I need to get caught up on everyone, but agree phone cameras have come a long way. I used to wonder why anyone used one, but I use mine most of the time now and pull out a camera when conditions need camera settings, which isn’t very often. I hope things are well with you, and all are safe in spite of recent events a few towns over…

  14. Your new phone takes some beautiful photos, Laurie! Phone cameras have indeed come a long way.

I heard the news this morning about Lewiston, Maine. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  15. I came to check on you on my phone after waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the news headlines but couldn’t work out how to leave a comment. I was relieved to read that you were all safe at home and hope you are still OK, other than being shocked by the terrible news. I am not sure how close you are but half-felt you might have mentioned one of the places that was attacked. It’s a very sad time. I am so sorry for the people and communities affected.

    1. So very moved by your concern. We are quite close—25 miles away. A student from our town’s high school was killed as was his father. The killer is still at large, and we are all on edge.

  16. Your new phone takes beautiful photographs Laurie. I hope you and your family are all safe following the terrible events in Lewiston 🙏 and send love and prayers across the miles 💞💜💞 xxx
