A Gathering of Scarecrows

This year, the Winthrop Grange has sponsored a Scarecrow Contest for families, organizations nonprofits, businesses, and churches. The response has been wonderful. Scarecrows are lurking on Main Street. They are settled by light poles. One is even lounging by the library, and he is clearly asleep at the job. All have really jazzed up Winthrop’s downtown.

Here are just a few of the entries. They range from cute

to odd but arresting

to cozy

to elegant

to vibrant

to spooky

to just plain fun.

I can imagine all the scarecrows late at night as they slide off their poles and glide around town, gathering by the lake to have a scarecrow dance, careful to return to their posts before dawn so that nobody knows about their nightly escapades. But those with sharp eyes and a notion for the uncanny might notice clumps of straw here and there by the water, evidence that there was some kind of wild, spooky gathering.

  1. It is such fun when a whole town gets into the spirit of things…scarecrows especially! I bet the local children could make up some good stories!

  2. It is wonderful that your local grange is still active. Applause to that. Then, I extend my applause to the crafty folks who created such interesting scarecrows. Impressive. I can almost visualize that evening gathering. 🙂

    1. Yes, great that the local grange is still active. I am so impressed with the scarecrows, and I only featured some of the ones that are downtown. Really fun!

  3. These are some of the best scarecrows I’ve ever seen. I really like the one taking a snooze, and the lady in black. I’d wear her boots in a minute! It was interesting to see a reference to a grange, too. I grew up when Iowa granges were important social centers, among their other functions, and a Sunday grange potluck always was special.

    1. Winthrop really went all out. I, too, like the snoozing scarecrow. In Maine, granges have more or less held their own, with some changes, of course. My mother was very active in the grange in her town, and we had my daughter’s bridal shower there.

  4. I love scarecrows. I especially love the one in the Japanese animation “Howl’s Moving Castle.” You never know with scarecrows what their true history might be.

  5. Haha, what a wonderful contest Laurie and these scarecrows look like they love to party! 💜

  6. It strikes me it may not always be convenient to have as active an imagination as yours with all these around, and the dark nights too…
