After the Hurricane

As it turned out, Hurricane Lee only glanced the Winthrop area, with gusty winds that weren’t strong enough to knock out power on a large scale. (There were some power outages, of course, and the midcoast area got hit harder, with extensive outages.)

We were all very grateful to keep the limited power we have. The old adage “some is better than none” certainly applies in this case. Yes, we would love to be able to use our oven, our washer, our dryer, and our dishwasher. We would love to turn on our computers with no worries about using too much power, But, we have lights and water and a working refrigerator and freezer. We can use our stove top and toaster.

On Thursday, the electrician will be coming to set things right. We are counting the days.

This week, I am hoping to get back to reading blogs and commenting. I certainly have missed keeping up with all of you.

My birthday was on Friday, the eve of the hurricane. To celebrate, we went to Absolem Cider Company, one of my favorite places that I’ve written about in previous posts.

We had delicious drinks and Thai food. There were cupcakes for dessert. The place was packed, and we had so much fun.

At Absolem, the sky at dusk, before the storm, was glorious.

I am now 66, and I love being an age with repeating numbers. My birthday came on the eve of a hurricane whose winds proved to be mild. A week before, there was a lightning strike.

It seems that 66 has come in with a bang.

Onward, ho!

  1. Happy Belated Birthday, Laurie! Repeating numbers have a certain magic to them. I’m glad you’re all safe from the hurricane. The thing looked pretty wicked while it was spinning so crazily in the water. I don’t imagine Mainers are too familiar with hurricanes — I can recall living on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and being without power for weeks!!

    1. Thanks, Debbie! Yes, love the magic of repeating numbers. We are not usually affected by hurricanes, but wind from other storms often knock out our power. As you know from experience, this is no fun at all.

  2. Happy birthday, Laurie. Glad Hurricane Lee didn’t cause much damage for you. We had 3.5” of rain, and our backyard, at the bottom of a hill and with a stream running through it, is an unmitigated disaster of rocks, mud, and water. But the sun is shining today, and someday our property will be taken care of!

    1. Thanks, Jane! Sorry to read about your backyard. Often storms sideswipe us and then head straight to the Maritimes. Darn storms! Wish they would just go out to sea and not damage anyplace.

  3. Well, gee! Now I have to question hundreds of years of sailing wisdom. You had a “red sky at night,” but you certainly didn’t have “sailors’ delight” the next day. What gives?

  4. Well Happy Birthday to YOU! I’m glad the hurricane wasn’t worse, and you guys will be able to limp until Thursday when hopefully everything will be fixed. We were in Maine in 2014 (I think) when another hurricane was coming up the Maine coast. We got drenched watching 4th of July fireworks and there were some big waves crashing on rocks but that’s all I really remember. Maine hardly ever has hurricanes…right? Or at least they didn’t used to have them. Climate warming?

  5. Happy, happy birthday! It certainly came in with a bang that you won’t likely forget anytime soon. I can only imagine you are counting the hours until the electrician arrives. We had all the usual forecasts for lots of rain, potential flooding, and power outages, but the entire day all we had was some wind with not a drop of rain. Happy Monday and may Thursday arrive soon for you. 🙂

  6. Happy birthday, Laurie! I’ll join you in the ‘doubles’ club this year, although mine will be 77 instead of 66. I’m glad you’ll be getting extra electricity as a late birthday present of sorts; living on the edge isn’t always a good thing! It sounds as though you celebrated well, and now that Lee has trucked off without leaving terrible damage, I hope life gets back to normal soon!

  7. Happy Birthday and how wonderful you were able to celebrate at one of your favorite places surrounded by family and that gorgeous sky!! I know there will be another celebration on Thursday when all the power returns.🙂

  8. Belated happy birthday greetings Laurie, this has certainly been a birthday to remember! So good to hear you missed the worst of the hurricane and were able to celebrate at one of your favourite places 💖 xxx

  9. We’ve missed you too. Happy birthday! I like being numbers that are divisible by a lot of numbers. I wonder where we get these ideas from? I hope your power is restored tomorrow and you can go back to the luxury of doing the laundry. 🙂
