BOWDOIN COLLEGE, MAINE: FOOD DRIVE AND HUMAN CHAIN

Take a look at what those energetic Bowdoin Collage students (ah, youth!) will be doing the end of April and the beginning of May. Four students have organized a food drive, and their goal is to deliver “1,200 cans to MCHPP [Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program] without adding to the carbon footprint.” They will do this by convincing other students to form a human chain so that the food is delivered, by hand, from Bowdoin College to MCHPP.

I spoke to Robin Gay, at MCHPP, and she estimated that the distance between Bowdoin College and their facility was about a half-mile. Robin also told me that the chain would need 700 people to move all that food. Twelve hundred cans of food moved one-half mile by 700 people? Sounds like just the kind of event that students would love to be involved with, and I expect there will be a great turnout.

If I lived in Brunswick, I’d be sure to witness this event on May 4. And maybe even move some cans of food. But driving from Winthrop to Brunswick to assist would go against the students’ purpose, so I’ll just admire from afar.
